How to Get from Katakolon Port to Ancient Olympia: The Ultimate Independent Shore Excursion Guide

Cruise ship docked at the port of Katakolon

Docking at Katakolon port for the day? You are just 30 minutes away from the birthplace of the Olympic Games. While cruise lines sell overpriced, slow-moving bus tours where you spend half your day waiting on 50 other passengers, doing an independent shore excursion from Katakolon to Ancient Olympia is faster, cheaper, and infinitely more fun.

Whether you are traveling on a budget or looking for door-to-door comfort, this breakdown covers every transport option, real prices, and how to plan the ideal 4-hour trip.

1. Comparing Your Transport Options from Katakolon Port

  • Public or Shuttle Bus (€8 Round Trip): The most popular budget-friendly choice. Buses depart right outside the port gate and drop you off in the town of Ancient Olympia—just one block away from the Olympia Back in Time office.
  • The Local Train (€10 Round Trip): A charming, scenic ride through the Elian countryside. Just like the bus, the historic Olympia train station is located only one block away from our shop, making your arrival effortless.
  • Car Rental (~€60 for the Day): Right at the port, you can rent a car for around €60. This is ideal if you want complete freedom to visit the ruins in the morning and stop at a quiet local beach on your way back to the ship.
  • Private Taxi (~€120 Round Trip): Travelling with family or a small group of four? Splitting a taxi is the ultimate VIP time-saver. Best of all, your driver can drop you right outside our office (located just across from the main church of Olympia), wait two minutes while you grab your VR glasses, and then drive you the 2 minutes straight to the Archaeological Site entrance!

2. The Perfect 4-Hour Independent Itinerary (10:00 AM Example)

Cruise passengers always ask: "How much time do I realistically need?" The magic number is 4 hours total from the moment you exit Katakolon port to the moment you step back on board.

💡 Insider Port Tip: Always allow 15 to 20 minutes from the official time your ship docks until you actually disembark and walk out of the port gates. For example, if your ship docks at 9:40 AM, plan to start your trip from the port gate at 10:00 AM.

  1. 10:00 AM – 10:30 AM | Travel from Katakolon to Olympia: Hop on your bus, train, or taxi outside the port gate and head straight to the town center of Olympia (right across from the main church).
  2. 10:30 AM – 10:32 AM | 2-Minute Fast Pickup: Stop by Olympia Back in Time. Our pickup takes just 2 minutes, and your rental lasts for a generous 3 hours.
  3. 10:32 AM – 12:00 PM | Explore the Ruins in 3D VR (1 Hour 15 Mins): Take a scenic 10-minute walk (or 2-minute drive) to the Archaeological Site. Stand in front of each monument, look through your VR glasses, and watch ruined foundations transform into towering 3D temples while listening to captivating stories in 8 languages.
  4. 12:10 PM – 1:00 PM | Visit the Archaeological Museum (50 Mins): Even though you don't use the VR glasses inside the museum, your 3-hour rental gives you plenty of time to walk over and admire the real marble masterpieces (like the Hermes of Praxiteles) before heading back.
  5. 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM | Easy Return & Back to Port: Most visitors return the equipment after about 2 hours and 30 minutes (around 1:00 PM), grab a quick Greek iced coffee or souvenir in town, and return stress-free to Katakolon port by 2:00 PM with plenty of time to spare.
