Visiting Ancient Olympia with Kids: How to Turn "Boring Stones" into an Epic Family Adventure

Children exploring Ancient Olympia with VR glasses

Let's be honest: taking kids to an archaeological site can go one of two ways. Either they are fascinated, or within fifteen minutes you hear the dreaded phrase, "I'm hot, my feet hurt, and all these rocks look the same!"

Because most of Ancient Olympia's temples were toppled by earthquakes centuries ago, younger visitors often struggle to picture what used to be there. Fortunately, with a little smart planning—and a dose of 3D technology—Olympia is actually one of the most family-friendly ancient sites in Greece.

1. Put VR Glasses on Them (And Watch Their Jaws Drop)

Instead of dragging your kids behind a 2-hour tour guide lecture, start your visit with a 2-minute stop at Olympia Back in Time.

  • Easy for All Ages: Kids aged 6 and up can easily wear and operate the VR glasses all on their own, while younger explorers (under 6) love looking through them with a quick helping hand from mom or dad.
  • Short, Kid-Friendly Stories: We keep the audio stories short, lively, and easy to understand for any age—so nobody gets bored.
  • Bare-Hand Virtual Magic: Kids' absolute favorite feature is the hand interaction, where they can reach out into thin air and hold virtual ancient objects with their bare hands!

2. Run a Real Race on the Ancient Stadium Track

Once your kids reach the entrance of the Ancient Stadium, have them look through the VR glasses first to watch ancient athletes sprinting down the track in full 3D. Seconds later, walk through the stone archway and let them race each other across the exact same starting line where champions ran 2,500 years ago. Unlike most ruins in Greece, walking and running on the stadium track in Olympia is completely allowed!

3. Parent Survival Guide: Strollers, Shade, and Free Water

  • 100% Stroller Accessible: Leave the baby carrier stress behind—the paths throughout the Archaeological Site of Olympia are flat, wide gravel walkways that are accessible everywhere with a stroller.
  • Plenty of Natural Shade: Unlike the Acropolis in Athens, Olympia lies in a lush green valley filled with giant pine, oak, and olive trees. Whenever you stop at a monument to use your VR glasses, you can stand comfortably in the cool shade.
  • Free Tap Water & WCs: There is free drinking tap water right at the entrance of the site—so bring your reusable bottles and fill them up for free instead of buying plastic bottles! Clean restrooms (WCs) are also conveniently located both at the main entrance and inside the archaeological grounds.
  • Best Time of Day to Visit: Beat the midday sun by visiting early in the morning right when the site opens, or aim for late afternoon, when the big tour buses have departed and your family gets the sanctuary almost to yourselves. Pack hats and sunscreen!
